I write this entry to show not only the US has problems regarding how wolves are treated. So let me write about the sad fate of a wolf again who had to die out of ignorance.
The wolf escaped last Saturday from a zoo in southern Hungary, the fact itself raises some questions. Wolves are not able to well adapt to zoo conditions but they are still kept captive in eastern Europe. Quite obviously measures were not taken to prevent the wolf from escaping and zoo director Miklos Szatyor is liable to that.
When zoo staff noticed the wolf is missing they immediately reported it to local authorities and the nearby forest region was closed so no one were allowed to enter. It must be noted as many of the director's supporters say the animal had to be killed so it won't eat children when it goes hungry. (This is not a serious argument, is it?)
Also it is not know why the wolf was shot with killer gun when staff was nearby, ready to stupefy him, then track him down and getting him back to the zoo. While it's said the animal was acting aggressively, local reports say he'd already turned back and attempted to run away from the men when he was shot at the back.
The last point is, why the staff did not request help from wolf expert Zoltan Horkai who is well-know in the region and whose experience had already saved many wolves' life.
The questions are cumulating as much as the signatures for the petition - director Miklos Szatyor must resign as the manager of the Zoo of Pécs, Hungary. As more proof is gathered, it gains evidence this sad case was not self-defence but mere murder and the director should be banned from ever dealing with animals.

the Kolmarden zoo story
Though many years passed since this story, I thought I would still reblog this. Unlike the theme of many blog entries here, in this story, it is not the wolves who died but it makes us think. What happened in the Kolmarden zoo is related to the obsolete 'alpha wolf theory' and why bad handling of captive wolves should be avoided. Plus, apparently, greed also played a major role in this tragic case...

Court Stops USFWS From Killing Red Wolves
On behalf of Defenders of Wildlife, the Animal Welfare Institute and the Red Wolf Coalition, the Southern Environmental Law Center argued in a court hearing on Sept. 14 that a preliminary injunction was needed to stop the agency from harming these native wolves in the wild.
Earlier that week, the agency announced its proposal to remove most members of the world's only wild population of red wolves that roam a five county area in northeastern North Carolina and put them into captivity, abandoning all protective efforts except in one refuge where one pack lives and in a bombing range.
"This is a great day for red wolves and for anyone who lov
Finally: Aerial Predator Hunting Banned in Alaska
After all this time that I and AoW have stood against aerial hunting of wolves and bears in Alaska, the barbaric practices have finally stopped. Ever since I was just a teenager, I had wished for this type of hunting to cease. My pleas have been answered many years later.
The Obama administration is banning sport hunting of bears and wolves on federal lands in Alaska's outback in an effort to stop what it calls the unethical practices of the state's game board, practices that former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has touted.
The Fish and Wildlife Service on Wednesday approved the regulations that ban hunting in Alaska's

I was surprised that information spreads so fast.
I'm Hungarian and I've watched several videos and articles about these arguments. Our wolf experts (e.g. the ones in the Bear Farm of Veresegyház) are trying hard to make people accept wolves and get to know them better, as some of them are returning to Hungary these days. (I also entered the cage of those wolves in the Bear Farm. Check out my gallery!)
This case did such a harm for the Predator Program, and I'm also sorry for the wolf, but if it had wounded/killed someone or something then the effect of it would have been a lot worse. We may not know if he/she was healthy.
